08 Sep Power-feed your Soul with MegaVerses
MEGA-VERSES CAN BE USED WITH PRECISION AND POWER TO TURBOCHARGE YOUR SPIRITUAL GROWTH.
We saw two weeks ago that every moment of every day, something in our soul is being fed and something is being starved. Through all the various media, through the workplace, through our peer groups, our souls are daily fed powerful messages that dull spiritual perception, divert spiritual focus, and dissipate spiritual strength.
It is not hard to see it, and we feel the spiritual drag that it creates for our soul. The question is, what do we do about it. The answer is complex and multi-layered. But we begin with taking care of self, offsetting the power of culture by power-feeding our soul with MegaVerses.
We saw last week that just as there are some foods that pack extraordinary nutritional wallop, so there are some Bible verses that pack extraordinary spiritual wallop. Among these are MegaVerses, which are verses that are so important and speak so powerfully to vital issues in the life of all Christians that every believer needs to master them.
These verses can be used like spiritual laser beams, burning intense spiritual truth into our souls directed specifically to one of our spiritual needs. As we study, memorize and meditate on MegaVerses, we power-feed our souls, and take steps to stand strong against the gravitational pull of modern culture.
I began to grasp the potential of this process a number of years ago during a time of very challenging personal circumstances. I was under such intense and unrelenting stress that I began to experience ominous physical symptoms. In the providence of God, I came across Gary Smalley’s book, Change Your Heart, Change Your Life. In it, he described a time of intense personal struggle he had gone through, creating serious physical problems for which he had been hospitalized. He began memorizing small portions of Scripture and meditating on them over and over each day, – instead of the mile wide and inch deep strategy, he began using the inch wide and mile deep approach. After about thirty days, he noticed that the stress lifted, even though his circumstances didn’t change.
I imitated the same process and experienced the same results. Smalley said that the reason for the thirty-day period is that that is how long it takes for the brain to rewire itself, creating new neural pathways in the brain for the new truth to travel. It literally creates a new way of thinking with new pathways in the brain.
Since then, I have spent hundreds of hours experimenting with ways of memorizing and meditating on Scripture to encourage mental renewal, which Romans 12:2 says is the key to spiritual transformation: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
I have used MegaVerses with laser-like focus to target areas of vital spiritual growth. My strategy in encouraging others with this process is to encourage focusing on one MegaVerse a month, memorizing it deeply, as we saw last week, and meditating on it at least four times a day (when you rise up, when you lie down, when you are waiting, and when you have your daily personal worship time – Deuteronomy 6:7) As you do, open your mind and heart, through prayer, to the work of the Holy Spirit as He applies the truth to your life. Rehearse it even more often as you are able.
Since it takes thirty days for the brain to rewire itself with a new thinking pattern, this spiritual strategy will powerfully rework the brain in a year’s time with twelve of the most important and powerful passages in the Bible. By the way, there are more than twelve MegaVerses, but using twelve to start out with is a manageable pace that will work for most people. At the end of year #1, twelve different passages can be chosen for the following year.
Here are twelve MegaVerses I suggest for the first year a person tries this:
- Matthew 22:37-40
- Romans 12:1-2
- James 1:2-4
- Romans 8:28
- 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
- Colossians 3:1-4
- Proverbs 3:5-7
- Hebrews 11:6
- 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
- Luke 6:31
- Philippians 4:6-8
- Psalm 103:11-14
I have tried to balance out a longer passage in one month with a shorter passage the next month. I encourage you to take this challenge: Start with MegaVerse #1 this month and go through all twelve in the next year. If you do, you will never be the same.
If you haven’t downloaded it already, I’ve created a 15 minute video with some tips on not merely knowing verses from the Bible, but on repeating them until they change you. You can still get that video for free here: Master the Bible So Well That the Bible Masters You.
