AMERICA: ONE NATION UNDER GOD!
Today in America we celebrate our 241st birthday. Americans are united, not by geography, not by race, not by national heritage, but by an idea:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” Declaration of Independence
Our Founding Fathers did not think the role of government was to bestow rights, but to protect those rights already bestowed on us by God. From the beginning we believed it was normal and desirable to look to Him for His guidance and blessing on our country. In fact, in our Pledge of Allegiance, we refer to ourselves as “one nation under God.”
In an example, our founding fathers were deadlocked at our nation’s Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. Benjamin Franklin called for prayer, to appeal to God for His help in getting through the impasse:
“I have lived, sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God Governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?”
The worldview that looks to God for guidance and blessing in the United States is – as we know – under massive assault. So, this 4th of July, let Christians look back with gratitude to celebrate God’s presence and impact on our national life in the past, and let us look forward in prayer to His continued presence and impact in the future, that this “one nation under God” can continue to thrive, for His glory, for generations to come.
