06 Feb Mastering the Bible – Part 2
As we mentioned last week in Mastering the Bible – Part 1, we read the Bible for breadth of knowledge. But we study the Bible for depth of knowledge. If we only ever read the Bible, we will be mired in a shallow knowledge of Scripture and limited in our ability to benefit from the deeper truth of Scripture. So, this week we progress to the next step in Mastering the Bible So Well That the Bible Masters You.
Step 2: We study the Bible for depth of knowledge
Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32), but we can’t be set free if we don’t know the truth. We must go beyond reading the Bible to studying the Bible.
Having said that, very few Christians are able to faithfully study the Bible without a teacher and without the structure and encouragement of studying with others, especially for new believers who may not know the Bible at all. For that reason, God has given the gift of teaching to certain individuals and we do well to align ourselves with them.
It is best to be able to sit under a good Bible teacher near where you live. But if that is not possible, or if you want to augment your personal study with additional teaching, a world of resources is available in print and/or online.
Also, one way of studying the Bible is not wrong and another right. Rather, there are different approaches that reflect the needs of the individual. The key is to get involved on a level that works for you.
So, get involved in a Bible study of some kind, preferably in a local church where you will also have the support of other people with whom you are in relationship. But independent Bible studies, online Bible studies and published resources are also good options.
Next week, when we continue our overview of my free video, Mastering the Bible So Well That the Bible Masters You, we’ll look at Step 3: Memorize to master the Bible.
Update on the YouTube Channel
Well, my docking station is fixed and I am back from board meetings, so I anticipate be able to begin recording this week. Assuming there aren’t any hitches in that process, I should be ready to begin posting videos soon. I want to try to get a number of videos “in the bank” to have a little cushion and give some flexibility and reserves for scheduling future recordings.
And, as always, we appreciate your ongoing prayers as we continue to lay the foundation for moving from this blog to a YouTube channel. I’ll continue to keep you posted. If you’re not already on my email list sign up for my free video here and you won’t miss any of those updates!
In the meantime, while I’m getting the YouTube channel ready, all of the past blog posts are still available – and you know that “repetition is the key to mental ownership!”
And if you’re new here, we recently finished a series titled “Moving from Checkers to Chess ~ 5 Steps to Unleashing the Power of an Eternal Perspective,” in which I “connected all the dots” from posts over the years and combined them into a “spiritual game plan.” That series is a great place to start.
I look forward to seeing all of you on my new YouTube channel soon, to further discuss how to walk closer with God and live better in life.
