Memorial Day

Memorial Day

Here in the United States, we have three major holidays to honor military personnel:

  1. Armed Forces Day, to honor those who are currently in military service.
  2. Veteran’s Day, to honor those who have served in the military in the past.
  3. Memorial Day, to honor those who died in military service to our country.

Today, of course is Memorial Day, the day we honor those who have died in service to our country. I have referenced this in the past, but I can find no better way to capture the spirit of Memorial Day than to quote President Reagan:

“It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who died in defense of our country, in defense of us, in wars far away. The imagination plays a trick. We see these soldiers in our mind as old and wise. We see them as something like the Founding Fathers, grave and gray-haired. But most of them were boys when they died, and they gave up two lives, the one they were living and the one they would have lived. When they died, they gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their chance to be revered old men. They gave up everything for our country, for us. And all we can do is remember.”

Margie and I are out of the office today in observance of Memorial Day. We are flying our flag in remembrance and honor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country that we might live in freedom. And we pray for the Lord’s comfort and peace to those of you who are still grieving for a family member or friend lost through military service. As Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13).
